Automated Dialog Replacement (ADR) is also similar to Foley in a sense. Foley is recreating the sound in the studio to enhance quality and ADR is rerecording dialogue by the original actor in the studio to also enhance sound quality. ADR is a modernized form of looping as it is Electronically mimicking the same looping process and rerecording the dialogue to fix and perfect the scene using today’s digital technology (“ADR. What is ADR? Automated Dialogue Replacement”, 2009).
Just Like Foley, ADR can be used as a remedy to help the film sound production reach its full potential when facing problems such as not being able to pick up high-quality sound in the process of filming. Moreover, There are other technical problems that might occur such as problems with the actor’s vocal performance, catching unwanted sound during recording due to location, poor mic placement, phase issues, and so on. However, ADR is not always used when there is a problem, some use this technique in a creative way to raise possibilities such as Marlon Brando in the Movie “ The Godfather”. He would mumble his way through dialogues too, later on, decide on his vocal performance based on the context of particular scenes in the ADR session. However, As I mentioned before this phenomenon back then was known as looping. ADR is also used to replace singing voices in musicals (Hess, 2014). Having said all this, Low budget independent films try to steer clear of ADR as to cut expenses and not everyone has the luxury to use ADR in a creative way (Barry et al., 2015).
